Cottage Living | Window Flower Boxes

The best part of my dad & Kim's visit last weekend was the belated Christmas gift they brought up for me.  Dad, besides being an expert rock skipper, is also a craftsman that builds beautiful furniture and other home and garden accessories.  For my Christmas gift this year, he built me the most adorable window boxes for my cottage!     My windows out front are pretty large so I needed quite a few potted plants, flowers, and herbs to fill the boxes.  But, it gave us the perfect opportunity to make a trip to our favorite store for some nursery shopping!

These beautiful flower boxes could not have come at a better time... I needed a dose of cutesy cottage decorating since "my" cottage is now "our" cottage and is completely filled with boy stuff.

Thank goodness for Kim's green thumb and guidance... hopefully I can keep these plants healthy, which would be a refreshing change from the garden massacre of 2012.  Literally nothing made it out alive.

Between the new deck, the green patio furniture, and the new window boxes - it looks so cute out front!  I can't wait for the mornings to warm up a bit so we can have breakfast and coffee outside on the weekends.

Found: Aptos Farmers Market

I love spending Saturday mornings at the farmers market in Aptos.  There's just something about getting up early, feeling the crisp air, and sampling fruit fresh from the farm that puts me in the right mind for the weekend - to really relax and enjoy myself without being a total bum.  There is a definite pattern I follow - Saturdays up early at the farmers market makes for a more productive, fun-filled weekend, whereas those Saturday mornings spent watching a movie and eating a heavy breakfast usually leave me in bed all day.  This is definitely the way to go... All of the fresh, beautiful food motivates me to cook and try new recipes incorporating more fruits and veggies.

My favorite store has even set up a booth recently, where they bring in lots of fabulous merchandise and host monthly seminars on things like beekeeping, making your own cheese, and caring for your own chickens.

I usually spend most of my cash on fresh flowers to fill my cottage...

Alright, alright... I'll admit it - the real reason I go is to eat this massive loaded baked potato for breakfast.  My thighs are crying, but my mouth is so happy!

I finally got a farmers market basket to make shopping easier than with a shoulder strap tote bag - I really love it!  I even shop with it at the grocery store now, too.

By the way, this picture was taken 0.01 seconds after I brought it home... surprise, surprise.

Weekend in pictures

I have been MIA for a whole week!  I definitely needed a week or so of reclusion, and I had a fantastic weekend to put me right back into the swing of things. Friday marked the end of Cheryl's first week at the office - I'm so happy to be working with her again.  We celebrated with cocktail hour at Paradise Beach Grille down in the Capitola Village, which has a great patio area right on the water.

Saturday morning was an early one - and we made it to the farmer market in time to have 1st pick of the beautiful flowers.

My neighbor Maggie and I grabbed some chai teas and drove up to Boulder Creek to peruse the little shops and flea market... I found a couple cute tops at a vintage shop - all for under $10!

I took a quick catnap and then headed out for dinner with some fun ladies in Downtown Santa Cruz.  I had the cosmojito, the lovechild of a cosmopolitan and a mojito and it was quite refreshing!

I had a lazy Sunday morning filled with a little coffee and a lot of Boo cuddles... he sinks into my lap like a pad of butter on a warm biscuit.  I like to joke that he's the sandman kitty - he always induces a pleasant nap.

I spent Sunday afternoon at a beach in Aptos with Rudy and the Johannes clan.  I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than laying on the beach with Rudy and reading a good book.  I'm thinking this should be the plan every Sunday.

Moving Art

I found this video on YouTube while clicking through random websites after Googling "choosing happiness", and thought I would share. I needed a refresher course on choosing happiness after reliving last week over and over again, making myself miserable with frustration over a situation I have little to no control over at work. This put me back at peace - a quick and subtle reminder of how amazing and beautiful life is here on earth. Everything negative is petty in comparison. On a similar note... my tulips have opened and look amazing!
